Join me on a hilarious journey through the outrageous world of 2000s parody movies! In this video, I watched and ranked every single one, from side-splitting comedies to bizarre flops that missed the mark. With a blend of nostalgia and candid commentary, I’ll break down the best gags, the most cringe-worthy moments, and those hidden gems that you might have forgotten about. Whether you're a fan of classic spoofs like "Scary Movie" or lesser-known titles, you won't want to miss my rankings and thoughts on what makes these films memorable—or forgettable. Grab some popcorn, hit play, and let’s dive into the wacky, wild, and wonderfully ridiculous era of 2000s parody cinema!

Video Summary

The text examines the evolution of parody movies, a comedy film sub-genre that dates back to the early 1900s, highlighting a marathon viewing of 13 films from the early 2000s, specifically from 2000 to 2010. The author begins with a nostalgic reflection, noting how the genre exploded with releases like **Scary Movie** (2000) but declined rapidly with lackluster entries like **Disaster Movie** (2007). The marathon involves ranking each film from worst to best based on personal experiences and comedic value. The author starts by praising **Scary Movie**, which cleverly parodies late ‘90s slasher films, noting its contemporary relevance and standout scenes. Moving on, **Not Another Teen Movie** impresses with its intelligence and humor, while **Scary Movie 2** is described as fun yet less memorable than its predecessor. The latter half of the viewing experience shifts to discussing films deemed poorly made by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, recognizing their collective works as lacking in coherence, creativity, and basic comedic standards. Movies like **Date Movie**, **Epic Movie**, **Meet the Spartans**, and **Disaster Movie** are described as aggressively bad, often resorting to mean-spirited and gross humor without delivering any substantial laughs. As the marathon progresses, films that show some redeeming qualities, such as **Scary Movie 3** and **Superhero Movie**, stand out, providing humor that still resonates. By the end, the viewing culminates with **Vampires Suck**, a parody of the **Twilight** franchise that is surprisingly coherent and enjoyable compared to earlier entries. Ultimately, the author provides a tier list ranking the films based on their overall quality, with **Scary Movie 1** being crowned the best. The experience is characterized as exhausting yet nostalgic, reflecting on how these films reflect a bygone era of comedy. The anticipation for a revival of quality parody movies is expressed, particularly with a new installment of **Scary Movie** on the horizon.

s: The parody movie is a sub genre of
s: comedy film that has been around since
s: the birth of cinema. Beginning in 1905
s: with the release of the movie The Little
s: Train Robbery, a parody of the 1903 film
s: The Great Train Robbery.
s: See what they did there? And over the
s: next few decades, parody would become
s: more and more commonplace. But then, the
s: new millennia came. By the mid-2000s, we
s: were getting parody movies every year.
s: So, like I've done multiple times on
s: this channel before, I decided to relive
s: that part of my childhood. I watched 13
s: parody movies back-to-back over the
s: course of a single weekend. Starting
s: with Scary Movie in 2000 and ending with
s: Vampires Suck in 2010. And let me tell
s: you, man, this was this was rough. So,
s: today I'm ranking them worst to best,
s: tier list style. I wanted to see which
s: ones still hold up and which ones should
s: be buried even deeper. Because there are
s: a few of those in this video. So, strap
s: in because this one's a bumpy ride. And
s: hey, man, if you enjoyed one of these
s: movies that I ended up hating, I'm not
s: going to judge you for that, man. We all
s: have different opinions.
s: Psych. If any of you actually enjoy
s: Disaster Movie in any way, shape, or
s: form, stay the [ __ ] away from me.
s: >> [music]
s: >> For day one, I watched three movies.
s: These movies were the ones that really
s: set the bar for the parody genre during
s: the 2000s and are a big reason why we
s: got so much trash later in the decade.
s: But before we get into the cinematic war
s: crimes that will soon be featured later
s: in this video, let's start where parody
s: actually made sense.
s: >> But wait, Dish wall.
s: >> Scary Movie is a send-up of late '90s
s: slasher horror films, especially Scream
s: and I Know What You Did Last Summer,
s: among other movies from the time. A
s: group of dumb teens accidentally kill
s: someone and so a knock-off Ghostface
s: kills them one by one. So, I'm not going
s: to get too deep into the plot. If you've
s: seen Scream, [music]
s: you know how this one ends, apart from
s: that one twist at the end, which is one
s: of my favorite twists in all of movie
s: history. I'm not even kidding, man. It's
s: The Sixth Sense,
s: The Usual Suspects,
s: uh Officer Doofy.
s: All right, argue with a wall. I think
s: this movie works so well because it was
s: so contemporary for its time. They were
s: referencing movies that released only a
s: couple years before Scary Movie. So,
s: films such as The Blair Witch Project
s: and Scream were very fresh in people's
s: minds and seeing such a quick turnaround
s: for parody was just not really done
s: before. A lot of the jokes in this movie
s: still land, even if some haven't aged
s: all that well. I always go back to the
s: beauty pageant scene. That one always
s: got me back in the day, as well as when
s: the character Buffy essentially kills
s: herself for Ghostface. I just thought
s: those were some pretty dumb, funny
s: moments. It's stupid in the best kind of
s: way. I especially love the Blair Witch
s: parody they do. It is a bit gross, but
s: it's ultimately playing into the
s: absurdity of that movie. So, I can't
s: knock it for that. This movie made Anna
s: Faris a household name, especially for
s: the time. She was, honestly, the perfect
s: lead for these movies. I can't picture
s: them with anyone else as Cindy Campbell.
s: Every character is a clear stereotype
s: from the movies they parody. SNL alum
s: Cheri Oteri, plays a parody of Gail
s: Weathers. Sherri Oteri plays a parody.
s: That's a tongue twister. But ultimately,
s: this is a parody movie firing on all
s: cylinders. It's smart enough, it's
s: stupid enough, and it's very much a
s: product of its time.
s: In the best way possible. Next up, we
s: jump from slasher horror to 27-year-olds
s: playing high school students. And no,
s: it's not Euphoria, it's not another teen
s: movie. Not another teen movie, dude. Not
s: another.
s: >> That's just way too much information for
s: me, Katherine.
s: >> It's essentially a blender mix of late
s: '90s rom-coms, especially She's All
s: That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and
s: American Pie. This was one of the movies
s: I had never seen before recording this
s: video, and I was pleasantly surprised at
s: how much I really enjoyed this movie.
s: The movie is about a football jock
s: played by Chris Evans, who makes a bet
s: with one of his friends that he can turn
s: the weird nerdy girl into prom queen.
s: Except her weird and nerdy is
s: essentially her glasses and the ponytail
s: she has. And that's kind of the humor
s: that is used throughout this movie. It's
s: very tongue-in-cheek. The cast itself is
s: actually pretty stacked. Chris Evans is
s: the football jock before he was Captain
s: America. And Jaime Pressly from My Name
s: Is Earl is here as one of the popular
s: girls before all the Margot Robbie
s: comparisons. Which I mean, come on,
s: dude, they're the same [ __ ] person.
s: Eric Christian Olsen is in this movie as
s: one of Chris Evans' friends. Ted Mosby
s: from How I Met Your Mother has a small
s: bit part in this movie. I was honestly
s: surprised at how many faces I actually
s: recognized in this movie, which is
s: always fun, man. You're just watching it
s: like Leo in Once Upon a Time in
s: Hollywood. Just, 'Oh, oh, holy [ __ ] I I
s: know that guy. The opening scene in this
s: movie is absolutely insane. You start
s: off with the weird nerdy girl the day of
s: her birthday. She's just woken up and
s: she's about to do do some deeds to
s: herself. That's the best way I can put
s: it without being too graphic. But then
s: her parents enter in the middle of the
s: act and she has to hide it. And
s: immediately I thought, oh, this is going
s: to be for shock value. But the way more
s: and more people enter the room and the
s: more increasingly innocent the person is
s: makes it genuinely funny for me. My
s: favorite recurring joke in this movie is
s: the Amanda Beker bit where this girl,
s: Amanda Beker, will enter any room and
s: suddenly the music will change and every
s: background actor is just looking at her
s: and staring silently.
s: >> What's going on?
s: >> Can't talk until she starts moving
s: again.
s: >> It's such a simple, dumb bit, but it
s: works. It just it works for this movie.
s: Throughout this movie we follow a trio
s: of underclassmen and their scenes do
s: take away from the main focus of the
s: film, but honestly that didn't matter to
s: me at all. I really love the references
s: they did with those guys, especially the
s: Breakfast Club one. Some of the jokes
s: are very much a product of their time,
s: but overall this is a very funny movie
s: and really not as gross as it could have
s: been. Let's move on. To close out day
s: one, we're going back to a familiar
s: franchise, Scary Movie 2.
s: In this movie the gang is now in college
s: and get invited to a fake sleep study at
s: a haunted mansion, which obviously turns
s: into ghosts, demons, a possessed clown
s: doll, and one big old weed plant.
s: Nice, dude. Most of the original cast
s: returns with a few notable additions. We
s: now have Francis from Malcolm in the
s: Middle, Tim Curry from a lot of [ __ ]
s: back in the day, and David Cross from
s: Mr. Show. But what is probably the most
s: notable performance from this movie is
s: Chris Elliott as the caretaker. Dare I
s: say the most recognizable part. Where
s: the first movie focused on the recent
s: horror hits, this one leans more into
s: films such as The Exorcist, Poltergeist,
s: The Amityville Horror among more from
s: that era. This movie took 9 months for
s: them to complete. That means from the
s: start of writing the script to when they
s: released it to theaters, which is half
s: the time they had for the first movie.
s: This could explain why a lot of this
s: movie feels a bit rushed, especially
s: towards the end of this movie when
s: they're in the basement running around
s: looking for the ghost with no clear
s: direction. There's even a bit that's
s: reused from the first movie. But again,
s: I can't blame them because even with all
s: that chaos of the production, it's still
s: a very fun and funny movie to watch. I
s: wouldn't say it's as memorable as the
s: first movie, but it definitely has its
s: moments. The plot itself is very easy to
s: follow, which is a blessing if you
s: compare it to the chaos that'll be shown
s: to you later in this video. I'm talking
s: about you, Disaster Movie. What the [ __ ]
s: even was your plot? As far as the jokes
s: themselves, a lot still land. The fight
s: scene with the stop-motion cat is a
s: personal favorite of mine. I also love
s: the recurring bit of the parrot that
s: talks back to everyone. There's that one
s: scene where Anna Faris gets told to shut
s: up by Vitamin C through the radio, and
s: the big old weed plant dude.
s: >> [snorts]
s: >> So sick. I actually love that scene.
s: Overall, Scary Movie 2 is like a warm
s: blanket. You know exactly what you're
s: getting, which is comfort and a good
s: time. Is that what a warm blanket is? I
s: I feel like that's what a warm blanket
s: is. Feels like a good analogy to me. I
s: don't know. Let's not think about it too
s: much. Moving on. Day one was ultimately
s: a very enjoyable experience. I finished
s: up at around 1:00 a.m. Tired, but happy.
s: But then I remembered something very,
s: very haunting. Tomorrow,
s: >> [music]
s: >> my nightmare begins. And it all starts
s: with two guys, Friedberg and Seltzer.
s: Let's talk about them.
s: at the UCSB.
s: Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer are
s: two Hollywood writers who first met each
s: other at college at the University of
s: California, Santa Barbara. But neither
s: of these guys majored in film. What
s: ultimately changed their mind was a
s: class that they took together about
s: Martin Scorsese. And they were so
s: inspired that they said, 'You know what?
s: This is what I want to do for the rest
s: of my life.' And so they did. They
s: became comedy writers. They got an early
s: win writing the 1996 Leslie Nielsen
s: movie Spy Hard. But the only reason that
s: ever came to be was because Jason
s: Friedberg's dad had directed Leslie
s: Nielsen a couple years prior in a golf
s: training video. So yeah, these guys are
s: nepo babies, or at least nepo baby
s: adjacent. But after the success of Spy
s: Hard, their careers ultimately started
s: to die down. Writing dozens of scripts
s: throughout the late '90s that ultimately
s: went nowhere. And then came their big
s: break, a writing credit on Scary Movie
s: 1. But the thing is, they never actually
s: worked on the Scary Movie script. In the
s: late '90s, their ex PR manager told them
s: that there was a rumor going around that
s: the Wayans brothers were writing a
s: parody of the movie Scream. And because
s: of this, both Friedberg and Seltzer
s: began to work on a spec script called
s: Scream If You Know What I Did Last
s: Halloween. The only reason they wrote
s: the script in the first place was for
s: leverage, and ultimately that business
s: model ended up working for them because
s: once Scary Movie was announced, the
s: studio behind it saw Scream If You Know
s: What I Did Last Halloween and decided to
s: buy it just to bury it. But because the
s: studios had bought the spec script, that
s: was enough for the Writers Guild of
s: America to say, 'You know what? They
s: deserve writing credits.'
s: >> There was another team
s: >> Scary Movie.
s: >> They wrote the first draft, correct?
s: >> No, they did not. They did not. We did.
s: >> And Miramax had bought their script to
s: take it off the market, and they tried
s: to say that we took [ __ ] from their
s: script, which is [ __ ] They never
s: went on the [ __ ] set with us.
s: >> even know where we shot it.
s: >> And so the guild arbitrators
s: and I won.
s: >> Yeah. Here's what happened.
s: >> So our old manager, he's like, 'What are
s: you working on?' I said, 'Well, I got
s: this idea. I want to make fun of
s: Scream.' He's like, 'Oh, that's a
s: [ __ ] excellent idea.' He leaves Gold
s: Miller 3 months later. He [ __ ] took
s: my idea and gave it to two those [ __ ]
s: dudes, and they were writing my idea at
s: the same time as I was writing [ __ ]
s: Scary Movie.
s: >> And because of this writing credit on
s: Scary Movie, studios around Hollywood
s: looked at these two and said, 'You know
s: what? Give them their franchise of some
s: of the worst parody movies of all time.'
s: But the parody movies these two made on
s: their own are barely considered parody.
s: What I like to call them is recognition
s: humor, which is essentially a very
s: surface-level reference to another movie
s: from that time. All four of them run you
s: about 80 minutes, but if you take out
s: the end credits, that's another 15
s: minutes being shaven off. So
s: essentially, they're only just over an
s: hour long. And when you do get jokes,
s: they're lazy, mean-spirited, gross,
s: offensive, and aggressively unfunny, and
s: sometimes
s: all at once. And for some reason,
s: they actually made money. For context,
s: Step Brothers was released the same year
s: as Epic Movie, and Epic Movie made a
s: better profit at the box office.
s: I'm not kidding about that. So, with all
s: that in mind, let's dive into their
s: movies for day two.
s: >> [sighs and gasps]
s: >> Day two.
s: The long haul. For this day, I watched
s: seven movies, and [music] four of them
s: were some of the worst pieces of media I
s: have ever seen [music] created ever.
s: With a combined Rotten Tomatoes score of
s: 12% [music]
s: over four movies, I was about to
s: encounter what I like to call the four
s: horsemen of the parody movie apocalypse
s: of the mid-2000s.
s: But that doesn't really have a ring to
s: it. When I was planning out this video,
s: these were the four movies I was
s: dreading to watch the most, [music]
s: because I remember how bad they were and
s: knew for a fact they weren't going to
s: hold up. And boy, let me tell you
s: something, I was I was right in that
s: observation. These movies are
s: aggressively bad. They're the kind of
s: movie you watch, and during your watch
s: of them, you think to yourself, 'Wow, I
s: am actually not only wasting my day, I'm
s: wasting my life doing this.' So, with
s: all that in mind, let's head into day
s: two.
s: Starting with the four horsemen of the
s: parody movie apocalypse of the
s: mid-2000s. God, I really need to work on
s: that that phrasing. First up, Date
s: Movie. The infection starts here, and
s: your boy is patient zero.
s: It's terminal.
s: >> [clears throat]
s: >> Date Movie is a spoof of romantic
s: comedies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding,
s: Bridget Jones's Diary, and Shallow Hal.
s: We follow Alyson Hannigan from How I Met
s: Your Mother fame playing a quote ugly
s: fat girl no one likes because she's ugly
s: and fat, end quote.
s: Off to a really great start with this
s: one, guys. She ends up skinny and
s: pretty, meets a guy, competes with his
s: evil ex-fiancée, and in she gets
s: married. This movie, along with other
s: Friedberg-Seltzer movies, is absolutely
s: obsessed with being mean. The first half
s: of this movie is fat phobic to a severe
s: degree. And when the jokes aren't
s: mean-spirited, they're just random lol
s: XD humor. It's just like, 'Hey, can we
s: hire an actor to impersonate Napoleon
s: Dynamite and Owen Wilson?' 'Oh, we can?
s: Have him say a line in the movie.
s: That'll get a few laughs out of someone,
s: maybe. I don't know. I don't know how to
s: write comedy.' Most of the humor in this
s: movie is just vague references to
s: rom-coms without adding anything from
s: those movies. Tony Cox plays a dating
s: coach named Hitch, and that's all they
s: really do with the Hitch name or
s: reference. It's like, 'Oh, this guy's
s: Hitch. Get it? Like Will Smith.' That
s: felt That felt a little racist,
s: honestly. There's a wedding planner
s: named Jello, and she's a Latina woman
s: with a BBL essentially. Oh, get it?
s: J-Lo, Jello.
s: Huh, instead of Taco Bell, they go to
s: Taco Butt. That's actually kind of
s: funny. I'm not I'm not
s: I'm sorry, dude. I'm sorry. There is one
s: scene where they're in a house and
s: there's a cat [ __ ] on the toilet
s: with a newspaper. And that's about as
s: creative as the jokes get in this one.
s: The ex-fiance subplot kind of shows up
s: out of nowhere during the second act of
s: this movie, and it really feels
s: shoehorned in. It was like, 'Hey, uh we
s: got to have a conflict in this movie.'
s: Now, admittedly, there were a few
s: misdirects that got a slight nose exhale
s: out of me, but even those jokes were
s: offensive and cruel. I did not feel good
s: watching this movie, and frankly, I have
s: no desire to ever watch it again, so uh
s: time to move on.
s: Epic Movie is a parody spoof that made
s: almost $90 million
s: at the box office because apparently the
s: average American soul is unsaveable.
s: Four orphans, each drift from a
s: different box office head, find golden
s: tickets to Willy Wonka's factory. But
s: after Wonka tries to harvest their
s: organs for candy,
s: don't ask, they escape through a
s: wardrobe into a Narnia knockoff. It's
s: here where they're supposed to save the
s: land, and it all culminates into a big
s: battle where a knockoff Jack Sparrow
s: kills Jennifer Coolidge. And that's all
s: you really need to know. There are a lot
s: of scenes in this movie that are just
s: unreasonably gross. There's a scene
s: where they parody Nacho Libre, and Kal
s: Penn's character gets some Doritos blown
s: in his face, and when it lands on his
s: face, they're wet for no reason. How did
s: they get wet? You just blew dry Doritos
s: in his face. What is the joke here? What
s: are you even trying to do with this? I
s: don't want to see that. Who wants to see
s: it? Who is this for? Now, unfortunately,
s: I do have to admit that there was a joke
s: in this that actually made me laugh,
s: like genuinely. It was the fight scene
s: with Fred Willard's character, and they
s: clearly used a very obvious body double
s: for him. Like you fully see the guy's
s: face. They do not try to cut around it
s: at all. But beyond that, most of it is
s: just gross or uncomfortable. The whole
s: Crispin Glover Willy Wonka scene was
s: just disturbing. There's also a sex
s: scene with Mystique, which again is
s: gross and disturbing. A lot of this
s: movie is just hard to look at. Daryl
s: Hammond is Captain Jack Swallows instead
s: of Jack Sparrow, because of course
s: that's his name in this. At one point,
s: he does a random rap song about the
s: Pirates of the Caribbean. It goes on for
s: 2 minutes. There's no real context for
s: it. It just kind of happens. Clearly,
s: the only reason it's in the movie is
s: because they had to pad the run time.
s: It's just proof of how lazy these movies
s: are. Let's move on. Next up, we have
s: Meet the Spartans.
s: It's a direct parody of 300. So, if
s: you've seen that, you've seen this
s: movie.
s: Um except that movie is much better, and
s: I haven't even seen it. So, uh that's
s: all you need to know about this one.
s: Obviously, they parody some movies in
s: between, but nothing really of note.
s: There is a Happy Feet reference at the
s: beginning, and it only set the tone for
s: how excruciating of a watch this was. To
s: be completely honest with you guys, I
s: skipped through a lot of this movie
s: because it had the same problem as Epic
s: Movie, where a lot of the jokes just
s: dragged on for way too long. You have
s: multiple dance sequences, multiple
s: parody battles, multiple fights that go
s: nowhere outside of 'Hey, look at this
s: reference in 300 times.' There's also a
s: yo mama battle that shows up towards the
s: end of this movie, and a lot of the
s: jokes used in this yo mama battle are
s: stuff that you might find impressive if
s: you're 10 years old, which only goes to
s: show what the target audience is for
s: these movies. There's an American Idol
s: parody that goes on for way too long. I
s: swear to God, it felt like it was maybe
s: 10 minutes. The one thing that made me
s: laugh in this movie was the fact that
s: they did a Sanjaya parody.
s: [ __ ] Sanjaya, dude. Imagine going on
s: American Idol and this is how you're
s: immortalized in media, a [ __ ] cameo
s: in Meet the Spartans. And the only
s: reason I laughed at it was because of
s: how outdated it was. Like there's no way
s: they were making this movie and thinking
s: to themselves, 'Oh yeah, that Sanjaya
s: joke is going to age well. People are
s: really going to get that when they watch
s: this movie in, I don't know, even 2
s: years from now.'
s: Why is it Sanjaya, dude? This entire
s: movie felt like they were padding
s: runtime. These guys don't know when it's
s: time to stop beating a dead horse. These
s: movies are essentially when you go to a
s: family gathering and there's like a
s: younger cousin who's trying to make you
s: laugh and they don't make you laugh with
s: any of their jokes and then suddenly
s: they say something accidentally funny.
s: So you give a nose exhale or maybe a
s: slight chuckle and then they start
s: saying that same phrase that made you
s: laugh for the rest of the family
s: gathering. They'll go up to you like,
s: 'Hey, hey, hey.' Uh Bonzo beans. And
s: it's like it's it's not funny anymore.
s: That's what these movies are. And the
s: only reason I know that all too well is
s: because I was that cousin around that
s: time.
s: I wonder what influenced me. It's
s: violently gross for no reason outside of
s: shock value. It's not fun to watch, it's
s: not funny, nor is it entertaining in any
s: way. Ultimately, this is a movie made
s: for man-children by man-children. And
s: frankly, I want to forget that I ever
s: watched it in the first place. So,
s: let's move on. By this point, the four
s: horsemen were beginning to take shape,
s: but there was still one movie left. One
s: movie so bad, it might be the worst
s: thing I've ever seen ever. Let's have a
s: talk about Disaster Movie.
s: >> Lisa!
s: >> Disaster Movie is a cinematic marvel in
s: the worst [music] way possible. The
s: movie is an end-of-the-world story where
s: a group of 20-somethings deal with every
s: disaster imaginable. You got
s: Cloverfield, 10,000 BC, High School
s: Musical, Ella Enchanted, Alvin and the
s: Chipmunks, Kung Fu Panda. They're all
s: here with zero correlation between them
s: other than the fact that they were
s: released around this time. Kim
s: Kardashian is in this one a year after
s: the Ray J tape, which if you think she's
s: in it for any other reason beyond that,
s: you have no clue the kind of creeps
s: we're dealing with here. The opening
s: party scene is meant to cram in as many
s: references [music] as possible. It's
s: hard to even follow what's going on or
s: what's happening in the movie. There are
s: way more song breaks and dance battles
s: in [music] this one as compared to the
s: other three. It really felt like there
s: was more dance battles than there was
s: actual plot. a parody of 10,000 BC at
s: the beginning, and they make fun of Amy
s: Winehouse. And knowing where her career
s: and life ended up after this, it's just
s: extremely depressing. Like, what's the
s: point of a joke like this if not to
s: punch down on someone? If you thought
s: the other three Friedberg-Seltzer movies
s: were bad, this one takes the cake. It's
s: not as gross as the other three movies,
s: but what it is is an egregious [music]
s: waste of your time. It's not even good
s: for a hate-watch. Honestly, avoid this
s: one like the plague. After Disaster
s: Movie, I had to take a break. I had
s: wasted nearly 6 hours of my life
s: watching Friedberg-Seltzer movies. 6
s: hours I knew I would never get back.
s: Watching the sunset while I sat on that
s: couch, the existential dread really set
s: in. Friedberg and Seltzer had taken
s: something from my soul. But the good
s: news was the worst was behind me, and I
s: was actually excited for the remaining
s: three movies on day two.
s: I got back to my seat after a long,
s: well-earned dinner. So now it's actually
s: time to watch something that resembles a
s: movie.
s: >> Cindy, the news is on.
s: >> Scary Movie 3 is where the series
s: changed hands. [music] The Wayans
s: brothers are now out after citing
s: burnout from the second movie, and to
s: replace them is David Zucker directing
s: and Craig Mazin co-directing and also
s: writing. David Zucker was one of the
s: co-directors and co-producers for movies
s: such as Airplane and The Naked Gun
s: series. Craig Mazin initially started
s: his career writing mostly comedy movies,
s: but what he's most known for now is both
s: creating and co-creating the shows Share
s: Noble and The Last of Us. Crazy how that
s: works sometimes. But the reason I
s: mention all this is because this movie
s: had some real talent behind it. And
s: honestly,
s: it shows. The plot is a mix of Signs,
s: The Ring, and 8 Mile into one absurd
s: storyline. Anna Faris is back as Cindy,
s: while Regina Hall is back as Brenda. And
s: both of them are just as funny as they
s: were in the first two. I'd argue that
s: this is Brenda's funniest movie in the
s: entire series. Charlie Sheen is in this
s: one. He essentially plays Mel Gibson's
s: character from Signs, as well as Joaquin
s: Phoenix No, it's not Joaquin Phoenix,
s: it's Simon Rex. Joaquin Phoenix is not
s: in this movie. As well as Simon Rex
s: playing Joaquin Phoenix's character from
s: Signs. Beyond that, the cast is
s: absolutely stacked in this one. You got
s: Leslie Nielsen as the president. I mean,
s: obviously he's going to be great. This
s: is This is his wheelhouse, man. Kevin
s: Hart and Anthony Anderson are hilarious
s: as Simon Rex's buddies. Even George
s: Carlin has a cameo, which was insane. I
s: totally forgot about that. Tom Kenny,
s: which, you know, is the SpongeBob
s: SquarePants, is uh the alien voices in
s: this movie, which uh really shocked me.
s: >> We must destroy her before 7 days.
s: >> I was like, damn, they got everyone for
s: this movie, huh? We even get a real
s: Simon Cowell cameo from the 8 Mile
s: scene. He's doing like an American Idol
s: parody, except this one is much better
s: than the one in Meet the Spartans. The
s: script feels noticeably smarter in
s: comparison to any of the Friedberg
s: Seltzer movies I watched before.
s: Friedberg Seltzer, man, that sounds like
s: a a new competitor to White Claw.
s: Introducing the new Friedberg Seltzer.
s: Now with 7.5
s: ABV, so you can watch epic [music] movie
s: and completely forget you ever did.
s: Simon Rex is absolutely hilarious in
s: this movie. Obviously, the 8 Mile scene
s: is one of the classic scenes in like all
s: of parody from this time. But him at
s: Brenda's funeral, as well as when he has
s: to break the news [music] to the little
s: girl in his family, both scenes just
s: delve [music] into chaos so perfectly,
s: and that humor is right up my alley.
s: >> EVERYONE YOU THE AROUND YOU IS DYING!
s: >> Had me laughing way more than I probably
s: should have. I guess everything looks
s: better when you compare it to four
s: pieces of [ __ ] The Signs parody itself
s: is spot-on. I watched Signs after
s: watching this movie and I couldn't watch
s: Signs without laughing. Like the scene
s: where they parody M. Night Shyamalan's
s: cameo is so good, dude.
s: >> Tom, I'll need a ride home.
s: >> The flashback scene gets me every time.
s: I thought they were just playing that
s: up, but they weren't, which makes me
s: appreciate the parody itself more. Now,
s: granted, not all of it ages well. Again,
s: it's still 2003, but I don't know, man,
s: most of it does. Next up is another
s: movie that I was genuinely excited for.
s: Superhero Movie.
s: >> I'm not wearing any diamonds.
s: >> This one is essentially a straight-up
s: parody of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. Except
s: this one is Drake Bell and has to face
s: off against the villainous Hourglass,
s: played by Shooter McGavin himself,
s: Christopher McDonald. Well, I never
s: thought that it would be so simple, but
s: I found a way. As Rick Riker, I became
s: the Dragonfly. This one was written and
s: directed by Craig Mazin with David
s: Zucker as an executive producer. Craig
s: Mazin's ability to write and direct
s: comedy is on full display here. This
s: movie still holds up. All right? It's
s: still good. It's still funny. Thank God
s: my childhood is still intact. The cast
s: itself is very late 2000s. You got Drake
s: Bell, you got Kevin Hart, you got
s: Christopher McDonald, and Leslie Nielsen
s: is Drake Bell's uncle in a much bigger
s: role than he was in Scary Movie 3. And
s: honestly, thank God because he's great
s: in this one, too. Now, before I go any
s: further, I do want to mention that yes,
s: this movie has not aged well in a lot of
s: ways. They do a parody of Stephen
s: Hawking which
s: >> And then there's all the sex.
s: >> is crazy how lore accurate it ended up
s: being. I mean, what did Craig Mazin know
s: about this guy that we didn't? There's a
s: good mix of visual jokes, but the real
s: strength is in the one-liners and
s: character interactions. The bit with the
s: nail gun is an absolute classic. It gets
s: me every time.
s: >> It's easier than it looks.
s: >> Rick Riker accidentally pushing the old
s: lady into the tree trimmer is a great
s: misdirect. The parody of the Spider-Man
s: scene where Spider-Man is almost caught
s: by the Green Goblin was also top tier.
s: It was stupid, but it was funny. And
s: again, a lot of the one-liners really
s: make this movie work.
s: >> I never married.
s: >> Fruitcake?
s: >> No, just never met the right woman.
s: >> I'm not wearing any diamonds is
s: something I will still quote to myself
s: to this day. Now, granted, some of the
s: jokes and the casting choices made for
s: this movie have not aged well at all.
s: But beyond that, this is still a very
s: strong and focused parody movie. And if
s: you said this was your favorite parody
s: movie from that time,
s: I would not blame you. This one still
s: holds [music] up. And because of that,
s: my mood was in a much better place than
s: it was at the beginning of this day. So,
s: thank you, superhero movie.
s: I needed it. To close out day two, the
s: Wayans family returns with Dance Flick.
s: This one is a parody of dance movies
s: such as Step Up and Save the Last Dance.
s: A girl from the suburbs moves to the
s: inner city. It's here where she falls
s: for a nerdy street dancer with a debt to
s: a gang lord. They end up falling in
s: love, teaming up to win a big dance
s: competition, and ultimately help fix his
s: life. That's pretty much it. Now,
s: admittedly, a lot of the humor in this
s: one just completely missed for me.
s: There's a scene at the very beginning of
s: the movie where it's a dance battle and
s: one dude just starts pissing on the
s: dance floor. There's also a scene where
s: one of the side characters ends up doing
s: a spinning dance move on her pregnant
s: belly and then the baby pops out. That
s: just was not funny for me. I'm sorry, it
s: wasn't. It felt like it was designed for
s: the trailer, like complete trailer bait
s: to get people to actually watch it. But,
s: there's also jokes in this movie that
s: are so absurd that they end up actually
s: working. I thought the head slide scene
s: at the beginning of this movie was
s: actually really funny. Damon Wayans Jr.
s: is the lead and easily the best part of
s: the movie. There's a scene where he
s: blames all the trauma in his life on his
s: love interest during what's supposed to
s: be a romantic, heartfelt first date.
s: It's just gaslighting to the point where
s: it's ridiculous. The lead girl's best
s: friend and her {quote} little minions
s: are another funny side bit. The way she
s: just talks trash directly to them and
s: they just brush it off like it's
s: nothing. It's so aggressively mean at
s: times that it actually loops back to
s: being funny. But, apart from that, I
s: just felt like this movie leaned too
s: much on gross out and shock humor.
s: There's also a scene where the lead
s: actress, who is white, um, does full
s: blackface.
s: No [ __ ] way they did that. I mean,
s: that one was purely like, my eyes were
s: bugging out of my head, dude. I did not
s: I could not believe what I was seeing
s: when that happened. Honestly, I felt bad
s: for the actress herself. I doubt she was
s: the one who suggested that kind of joke.
s: I would hope not. And it's not like she
s: was in many movies after this one, which
s: only makes me think this did not help
s: her career in the slightest. Because
s: imagine being a casting director or
s: director, and you see her audition, and
s: you go, 'Wow, she's really good.' And
s: then someone's like, 'Oh, hold up, man.
s: Have you seen her in Dance Flick?'
s: Do you really want that screenshot being
s: circled around Twitter? But, yeah, it
s: was not good to see. It was I I felt
s: deeply uncomfortable watching that. In
s: terms of a plot, uh it's there. It's not
s: a smart movie. It's not even that good,
s: but it's still funny enough in certain
s: ways that if you were to turn off your
s: brain and watch it with a few friends,
s: you definitely get something out of it.
s: And for that, I can't really knock it.
s: It's just not as good as some of the
s: others. And with that, day two [music]
s: was complete. I was officially over the
s: hump. I was exhausted, but more
s: importantly,
s: I was relieved. A weight had been lifted
s: off my shoulders. Two weights, actually.
s: One named Friedberg, and the other named
s: Seltzer. Regardless, I was not done yet.
s: I still had three movies I had to watch
s: the next day. And to make matters worse,
s: the last movie I would watch tomorrow
s: was written by two familiar faces. Want
s: to guess who? Anyways, enough talking.
s: Let's rip this band-aid off and get to
s: day three.
s: >> [sighs]
s: >> I am not excited for this one. Also,
s: yes, I did shave the beard.
s: Uh it was time. You know how when
s: someone is excited for something, they
s: may say, 'My expectations [music]
s: are through the roof.' Well, for day
s: three, my expectations were the inverse
s: of that. Except, they weren't in the
s: basement. They were at the Earth's core.
s: By this point, I wasn't hoping to laugh.
s: All I wanted was closure. Closure on a
s: marathon that has been going on for far
s: too long at this point. So, let's just
s: get to it. First movie up, Scary Movie
s: 4. All right, a familiar face. At least
s: we got that going for it. Hopefully,
s: this isn't the worst of the franchise.
s: All right, let's let's watch.
s: Oh, no.
s: It was.
s: >> [ __ ]
s: >> Anna Faris returns as Cindy Campbell,
s: now dealing with the cursed house from
s: The Grudge, aliens from the 2005 War of
s: the Worlds movie, and two Jigsaws from
s: the movie Saw. This is another Scary
s: Movie done by both David Zucker and
s: Craig Mazin, and because of that, it
s: definitely has its moments here and
s: there, but it is by far the weakest of
s: the four original Scary Movies. Regina
s: Hall does return as Brenda. Simon Rex
s: also returns, but it's only for a
s: flashback scene where he ends up dying.
s: And the guy who replaces him as Cindy's
s: love interest in this movie is just not
s: as funny as his character was. I don't
s: know, man. At least Simon Rex's
s: character was a bit likable. He
s: definitely caused a lot of [ __ ] in the
s: third movie, but at least he wasn't
s: doing it maliciously. He was just trying
s: to do the right thing, even if it meant
s: it was [music] the wrong thing to do in
s: that situation, because there was
s: nothing really redeeming about this
s: character Tom. He just seemed like he
s: was an [ __ ] and did not want to do
s: [music] right by people. So, you were
s: never really rooting for him like you
s: might have been rooting for Simon Rex in
s: the third movie. Plot-wise, it's
s: basically nothing. I'm not going to
s: stand here and say that the first three
s: Scary Movies were anything of note, but
s: this one felt especially bad. There's a
s: whole scene that's dedicated to a parody
s: of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, but
s: it just kind of happens. The only thing
s: I really remember from that scene is
s: Elizabeth Banks's character is blind,
s: and so when they have a meeting in the
s: church, she thinks it's an outhouse, and
s: yeah, everyone just kind of sits there
s: awkwardly. It felt a bit played out,
s: especially from all the other movies I'd
s: already seen. It wasn't It wasn't
s: anything new. Again, the ending itself
s: is very stupid. [music] I don't know, it
s: just felt like a really lazy way to wrap
s: up this movie. But it does have its
s: moments. I really like the Dr. Phil and
s: Shaq opener. I liked how they made fun
s: of Shaq's free throw ability. I did like
s: the one scene that Simon Rex was in.
s: They made fun of the Million Dollar Baby
s: neck snap thing. I thought that was
s: absurd enough to work. Leslie Nielsen is
s: back as the president, and again, he
s: steals the show in every scene he's in.
s: The George W. Bush parody they did, that
s: was That was insane. The first time I
s: watched this movie maybe 15 years ago, I
s: did not understand that reference, and
s: now I do, and it got me way more than I
s: thought it was going to. But in terms of
s: the Scary Movie franchise, it's
s: definitely very end-of-the-road energy
s: here. You can just kind of feel that
s: vibe from this movie. It's the weakest
s: of the original four, and it's not even
s: close. Next movie.
s: Stan Helsing is the only movie on this
s: list that I had never heard of before
s: making this video. And for that reason,
s: I was pretty excited to see what it was
s: about. And what I got was uh some mid.
s: It It was pretty mid. Wasn't as bad as
s: the the Friedberg Seltzer movies, of
s: course, but it wasn't too far off,
s: that's for sure. A lazy video store
s: clerk named Stan Helsing goes on a wild
s: goose chase with three of his friends on
s: Halloween. The group of friends
s: eventually find themselves in a haunted
s: Halloween town where Stan Helsing learns
s: that he's a direct descendant of Van
s: Helsing. So now he has to save the town
s: from a bunch of knockoff horror movie
s: villains, which all culminates
s: essentially into a karaoke battle, which
s: yeah, man, cool.
s: Whatever. This is very much a B movie.
s: The budget is clearly way less than any
s: of the other movies I've already covered
s: and it suffers as a result. It's more
s: interested in parotting the villains
s: over the actual movies they came from,
s: which felt like a missed opportunity in
s: my opinion. Felt like they could have
s: gotten some easy jokes at making fun of
s: how cheesy some of the deaths in movies
s: like Halloween or the original Friday
s: the 13th [music] looked by today's
s: standards. Something like that to give a
s: nod to the original movies they're based
s: off of instead of just making a knockoff
s: version of Freddy Krueger or Jason
s: Voorhees. The movie is pretty boring
s: overall. Most of the jokes don't really
s: land. Some are genuinely disturbing. Not
s: even gross out, just flat out
s: disturbing. The entire gas station
s: sequence was deeply uncomfortable. That
s: felt more like horror than horror
s: comedy. But despite that, there were
s: some moments that got some genuine
s: laughs out of me. Like there's one scene
s: where Stan ends up beating the absolute
s: [ __ ] out of a kid in a hockey mask
s: because he thinks it's Jason [music]
s: Voorhees and then his entire hockey team
s: pops out of a minivan and starts beating
s: up Stan. It wasn't the best written joke
s: of all time, but it was slapstick enough
s: to make me laugh. I think my favorite
s: scene in the entire movie is when the
s: group of friends encounter a dark
s: hallway, and Stan tries to get Keenan
s: Thompson's character to go in first, and
s: Keenan Thompson just mumbles something
s: back incoherently because he's so
s: scared.
s: >> Go get your phone, Teddy.
s: >> I thought that was a genuinely funny
s: moment, and as I've said before, at
s: least it's not as gross as any of the
s: Friedberg Seltzer movies. The bar may be
s: in hell, but hey,
s: at least this movie clears it. With
s: stronger writing, this movie definitely
s: could have become a cult classic for the
s: Halloween time, but as it is, it's
s: [music] just kind of there. It's not
s: bad. It's not good. It's not awful. It's
s: just forgettable, and that's the movie's
s: biggest offense.
s: Finally,
s: the last movie. Movie 13 of 13, written
s: and directed by Jason Friedberg and
s: Aaron [music] Seltzer. No!
s: Actually, it's not that bad. It's
s: actually not a bad It's actually kind of
s: good for a parody.
s: How did that happen?
s: >> You're the Black Eyed Peas?
s: >> Vampires Suck is a direct parody of
s: Twilight as well as Twilight Part 2, New
s: Moon. Becca Crane moves to a small
s: Washington town, falls for the vampire
s: Edward Sullen, and deals with all the
s: [ __ ] from those movies. If you've
s: seen any of the Twilight films, you know
s: what this movie is about. Twilight is
s: already so absurd in its [music] own
s: right that it lends itself perfectly to
s: parody, and because of that, this movie
s: does a pretty good job making fun of the
s: source material. The actress who plays
s: Becca in this movie nails all of the
s: little Kristen Stewart [music]
s: mannerisms that always get mocked when
s: you think of Twilight. Jokes like that
s: are much more subtle and funnier than
s: any of the gross-out humor from
s: Friedberg and Seltzer's first four
s: movies. They still make pop culture
s: references.
s: >> Do you like the Black Eyed Peas?
s: >> But they don't derail the story like
s: they do for the other Friedberg-Seltzer
s: movies. The main focus stays on Twilight
s: and the team Edward versus team Jacob
s: feud that was going on during the time,
s: which works way better than if a random
s: Na'vi from Avatar or Charlie the Unicorn
s: or the Annoying Orange just suddenly
s: showed up and, you know, tried killing
s: Jacob and Edward or something. I don't
s: know. So, it was nice they removed that
s: joke structure from this movie.
s: If you can even call it a joke
s: structure. Even the jokes that mentioned
s: the Black Eyed Peas and the Jonas
s: Brothers were smarter than anything in
s: the first four movies.
s: >> I know what you are.
s: >> Say it.
s: >> Jonas brother.
s: >> That's right.
s: Wait.
s: >> I thought the dad character in this
s: movie was really funny. The over-the-top
s: fight scene in the background while
s: Becca friend-zones Jacob is great. The
s: scene where Edward uses another student
s: as a human airbag to block the car got
s: to me, too. At one point, Edward Sullen
s: wears a hazmat suit. He also ends up
s: juggling a baby and a bowling ball at
s: the same time, which isn't the smartest
s: joke in the world, but
s: it's funny enough. And it was also the
s: last movie of my movie marathon, so
s: spirits could not have been higher for
s: this movie. But even with that, I still
s: think this movie is a worthy parody film
s: from the era. I don't think it's as good
s: as some of the better parody movies I
s: talked about in this video. But, as a
s: parody movie, it definitely holds its
s: own. This movie feels closer to
s: superhero movie than any of the other
s: Friedberg-Seltzer films. It isn't as
s: good, but it's coherent and focused. And
s: for that reason alone,
s: I can appreciate what it is. So, day
s: three
s: complete. I can't believe I'm actually
s: done. Actually, I'm not. I got to do a
s: tier list. Let's get into that.
s: Now, to help better organize my
s: rankings, I've put each of these movies
s: in tiers. And if you got a different
s: opinion than me, that's all right, man.
s: That It's a free country. So, you know,
s: who cares, really? Anyways, enough
s: talking. Let's get into F tier, the
s: comedy graveyard. F tier movies are
s: parody at its lowest. These movies are
s: an aggressive waste of your time, and
s: honestly, not even worth a hate watch.
s: Coming in at number 13, our last place
s: movie is Disaster Movie. One of the
s: worst movies, if not the worst movie, I
s: have ever seen in my life. I have never
s: been more unreasonably mad watching a
s: movie. Actually, scratch that. It was a
s: very reasonable anger. Let's move on to
s: number 12. Meet the Spartans. It's
s: unfunny, it's gross, it's offensive. It
s: honestly checks off all the boxes for
s: your typical Friedberg-Seltzer movie,
s: which is not a good thing. In fact, it's
s: a very bad thing. So, let's move on to
s: the D tier, Barely Movies. These movies
s: are a regretful watch in every way. Just
s: not as regretful as the F tier,
s: if that makes sense. Starting at number
s: 11, we have Date Movie. The only thing
s: putting this above any of the F tier
s: movies is that it technically holds
s: together as a story. It's a bit less
s: nonsensical than the first two movies I
s: talked about. Overall, it's lazy,
s: mean-spirited, and feels like it was
s: written by teenagers.
s: Pass. At number 10, we have Epic Movie.
s: Now, admittedly, at least there is
s: somewhat of a plot to follow, and I did
s: laugh a couple of times at some of the
s: more stupid jokes. At least I exhaled
s: out of my nose a couple of times. But
s: again, this one is still unnecessarily
s: gross, and ultimately most of the humor
s: relies on pop culture references from
s: 2007. It's just really dumb and gets old
s: really quick. Moving on, we have C tier.
s: I guess that existed. These are the
s: movies that work best as background
s: noise. They're not something you really
s: need to sit down and give your full
s: attention to, but they're not
s: offensively bad like the other movies
s: I've just talked about. So, at number
s: nine, we have Stan Helsing. This is a
s: fairly harmless parody movie when you
s: really look at it, but it's very
s: forgettable. That's all I got. Coming in
s: at number eight, we have Scary Movie 4.
s: I don't know, man. This one was just the
s: most forgettable one from the Scary
s: Movie movies, so uh it felt right to put
s: it here. It's not offensively bad, but
s: it's not
s: offensively good, either. Moving on,
s: we're headed to B tier. Good mid. It's
s: mid,
s: but it's good. Any questions? Some jokes
s: land, some don't, and they're definitely
s: a bit more memorable than anything from
s: C-tier or below. At number seven, we
s: have Dance Flick. It definitely has its
s: funny moments, but overall, it's pretty
s: uneven. Some jokes definitely didn't age
s: well. In fact, some of them were
s: completely horrifying. Uh I can't rank
s: this movie any higher. I just can't. I
s: can't do that on a moral and conscious
s: level. So, uh moving on. At number six,
s: just missing out of the top five is
s: Vampires Suck. This movie was a
s: shockingly competent parody, which
s: doesn't seem like high praise, but you
s: got to remember, this was written and
s: directed by Friedberg and Seltzer. This
s: is their Jordan Flu game. All right,
s: enough of that. Let's move on to A-tier.
s: The comedy films that are actually
s: pretty good. These are the kind of
s: movies that you can rewatch and still
s: laugh at jokes you've laughed at before.
s: They're that good. Coming in at number
s: five is Scary Movie 2. It definitely
s: doesn't hit the highs of the first
s: movie, but it does have enough iconic
s: moments to stand on its own. At number
s: four is Scary Movie 3. It's a complete
s: change of pace from the first two Scary
s: Movies, which I think was definitely
s: needed. And although a lot of it doesn't
s: hold up by today's standards,
s: uh can you really expect that from these
s: parody movies? I mean, come on, dude.
s: That's It's kind of par for the course
s: here. At number three, our bronze
s: medalist for the video is Superhero
s: Movie. I had a lot of nostalgia for this
s: movie going into making this video and
s: I'm glad to say that this movie still
s: holds up.
s: At least in my opinion. I could have put
s: this one at first. I'm not even kidding.
s: I love this movie. Moving on, we have S
s: tier, the true survivors. These are the
s: movies you think of when you think of
s: parody. Coming in at number two, our
s: silver medalist, Not Another Teen Movie.
s: This movie was very smart, very
s: self-aware. I did not expect to like
s: this movie as much as I did, but hey,
s: sometimes it be like that. Coming in at
s: number one, the winner of the gold medal
s: of this video
s: is Scary Movie 1. Woo! Yeah, dude. Who
s: would have thought the first and most
s: popular movie was the best?
s: >> [sighs]
s: >> This was a waste of time. Well, we're
s: done. Do I look tired because I sure
s: feel it. As bad as most of this movie
s: marathon was, there is something
s: endearing about these movies. They all
s: paint a picture as to what comedy was
s: like just before the internet changed it
s: forever. And with Scary Movie 6 set to
s: be released this year, I can only hope
s: that parody will soon return to what it
s: once was. But good time that brought
s: generations of movie watchers and comedy
s: lovers together. I've been Lou Ryan and
s: thanks for watching.
s: Hasta luego.
